For all the people who are fighting with COVID-19, you are not alone.
Coming from a small island, Taiwan, which is always abandoned by the rest of the world when there is a disaster happening. We are blocked to join international organisations and restricted to receive shared information among the world because of the political issue with China.
We learned our lessons from SARS, it was harsh and tough. When COVID-19 started and the outbreak grew at the beginning, the government of Taiwan reacted immediately and tried to keep everything in control, stopping rumours and ensured the information was transparent with the public.
It is quite normal for people in Taiwan to wear masks every day. From preventing breathing in polluted air, getting suntanned (keeping your skin as white as possible is the main goal over there), having bugs bumping into your face while riding a moped/scooter or trying to have fewer bacteria contacting your face while you have an acne breakout… there are all sorts of reasons why people have a mask on their face when they are at outdoors.
As soon as the outbreak happened, wearing masks became a faith to protect ourselves and others, as COVID-19 can be transmitted via air in droplet form. While wearing mask will not 100% prevent you from getting the virus, you at least have a lower chance. Wearing a mask properly means you are aware that there is a thing on your face, warning you and allowing you to not touch your face/mouth/nose with your hands directly even if you forget. The virus can survive on surfaces for several hours, so if you accidentally touch it in public places and touch your face before washing your hand then oops!
We will get through this together, please stop discriminating people who wear a mask, even you don’t believe wearing a mask is fully effective. It is a belief /reminder for the people who wear it (just like you wouldn’t touch your face with full makeup, the mask reminds you not to touch your face) and we human beings are going to fight through the COVID-19 war together.
May the force be with you.
I have never felt so proud to be Taiwanese, even though I’m not in Taiwan right now. My heart will always be with my people and for the Taiwanese people overseas, please stay safe.
